Hope for Man

Hope for Man Mural

Physical Characteristics

You will notice how the figures in the foreground including Christ, have larger feet and smaller hands. This was done to accent the feeling of depth and forward movement.

Stylization

As you look closer at the images, you will see how “Cubism” comes to play in the form of simpler lines and forms. The angled shapes of the arms, hands, legs or bodies and the rectangular shadows direct your eye to the centre. The pyramidal shape of the paths emphasize the general thrust of the mural.

Colour Scheme

The colours were chosen to accent the various images throughout. The intense white, yellow and orange were placed in the centre to draw your eye to Christ, the central figure. Other images are rendered in tones of blue, purple and red to give them secondary importance and to suit the emotional feeling expressed.
Mural Symbolism.
It is important to understand that the symbols expressed are the artist’s (Monte Wright) personal interpretation.
Since God is crying, one might think he has given up on man. However, one should believe that God is crying for man’s sins yet is confident there is hope for him.
The enlarged feet represent Christ’s mortal ties with man. Although Christ is reclined, he is about to rise. The cross above symbolizes life after death or the goal to which man is striving.
This represents man’s struggle to find a personal faith through Christ. Since there are many paths man can follow, some will achieve their goal, others may not.
The hand represents man’s grasping for that intangible form of faith, spirit or love. Some perhaps may never grasp it.
The scientist or doctor symbolizes the medical profession’s manipulation of life through gene experimentation or abortion. As one looks at the slanted stairs, it would appear man is on very insecure footing as he ventures into areas which are better left to God.
The future man or devil image is higher than Christ. He represents the future and is trying to distract man from reaching his goal. The molecules symbolize the nuclear age or man’s love of materialistic things. The distorted face turning away from God’s light illustrates Satan at work.  The cross in the future city represents hope for man. Man will believe in God.
Mary, or the mother image, is leaning forward to protect the child. This image represents man’s concern for all races. A suffering child, regardless of colour, is God’s child.
The hand and sword illustrate violence in the world. You will notice the black child is frightened and the sword is close on the heels of people moving towards Christ.

Hope

Despite problems and stress facing us, we can reach out to Christ, the Saviour and guide for the world. There is hope for all of us, which comes int eh form of a risen Christ who accepts us as individuals and leads the way.
